Chain Link Fence Rental in Brooklyn

Brooklyn has a large stock of one-, two-, and three-family renovation and demolition sites, making the NYC chain-link exception particularly relevant to contractors working across the borough.

If you’re gutting or rebuilding a rowhouse or a small multi-family, there’s a real chance chain link is permitted on your job.

Is Chain Link Permitted on Your Brooklyn Site?

NYC Building Code §3307.7 establishes the requirements for construction-site fencing, with specific provisions governing when chain-link fencing may be used.

Chain link is an exception to the standard construction-fence approach, and Brooklyn’s large stock of one-, two-, and three-family properties makes that exception particularly relevant here. Eligibility depends on the building type, height, setback, and surrounding site conditions.

That last part is where Brooklyn jobs win or lose. Brownstone and rowhouse blocks in neighborhoods like Bed-Stuy, Crown Heights, and Park Slope often sit close to the property line with little to no front yard.

If the applicable setback isn’t met, the chain-link exception may not apply, regardless of how small the building is. Semi-detached and freestanding homes with real front yards, more common in parts of southern Brooklyn, clear the setback more easily.

The examples below show when chain-link fencing may be an option based on the building type, height, setback, and site conditions.

One more wrinkle worth checking before you order: if your rowhouse sits inside a designated historic district, Landmarks Preservation Commission review can apply to streetscape elements independent of the DOB fencing rule. That’s a separate approval track from anything covered here, so confirm with LPC if you’re in a landmarked block.

If your site doesn’t meet the applicable chain-link exception, solid panel fencing may be required. We’ll recommend the configuration that fits the applicable site and code requirements rather than put you into a setup that may not qualify. Panel or In-Ground in Brooklyn

Most Brooklyn renovation sites are tight to the lot line with no room to spare, which makes free-standing panel-with-stands the practical default: base plates and ballast hold the fence in place with no digging and no restoration when the job wraps.

In-ground, post-driven chain link becomes worth comparing when a site has an actual footprint to work with, a larger lot in a lower-density pocket, or a job expected to run several months where the extra rigidity pays off. It’s the exception on most Brooklyn blocks.

If your project moves through phases, demo, then framing, then a different footprint for finishing work, panel sections reset without any ground disturbance. That flexibility matters more on a rowhouse job with a compressed timeline than it does on a longer commercial build.

Delivery and Installation in Brooklyn

Equipment ships from our Kew Gardens yard in Queens, providing direct access into Brooklyn without routing through a separate local yard. Narrow rowhouse blocks and permit parking are the two things that actually affect scheduling, not distance, so tell us your block width and any alternate-side restrictions when you call.

A site survey ahead of delivery can confirm the available fence line, catch uneven grades on older lots, and help determine whether post-driving is practical given what’s actually under the surface.

Frequently Ask Questions

It may, provided the property meets the applicable requirements for building type, height, setback, and surrounding site conditions. Many Brooklyn brownstones sit close to the sidewalk, so the actual site dimensions need to be checked rather than assumed.

OB's fencing rule and LPC's historic district review are separate approvals. Clearing the §3307.7 exception doesn't clear LPC review if your block requires it.

Yes. Because both options ship from the same yard, we can swap fence types on an existing job with a single visit rather than a full new setup.
